From muddy clothes to expensive shopping habits, horses have a wonderful way of taking over your life. Here are 10 things that pretty much every horse owner will recognise.
1. You can never have enough rugs
You have lightweight rugs, turnout rugs, stable rugs, fleece rugs, waterproof rugs, summer sheets…
And yet somehow, when the weather changes, you still don’t have the right rug.
Of course, your horse will also find a way to destroy the brand-new one within approximately 48 hours.
2. You own more horse equipment than clothes
Walk into your house and you might see a normal person.
Open the boot of the car, however, and it’s a completely different story.
Headcollars, grooming kits, spare rugs, boots, feed buckets, haynets and at least three things you forgot were in there.
The car may technically belong to you, but your horse has definitely claimed it.
3. You can identify your horse by their whinny
There could be 20 horses shouting from the field, but you know yours.
You could be half asleep, standing at the other end of the yard, or talking to someone at a competition — and suddenly you hear that whinny.
“Yep. That’s mine.”
4. You spend more money on your horse than yourself
New boots for you?
Maybe next month.
A new rug your horse absolutely does not need?
Purchased in approximately 14 seconds.
And don’t even get started on the latest grooming products, supplements or matching accessories…
5. Mud is no longer something you fear
At some point, you simply accept it.
Mud on your boots. Mud on your trousers. Mud on your jacket. Mud in the car.
You wash everything.
Then you go back to the yard and do it all again.
6. Your horse has an incredible sense of timing
They can stand quietly for 45 minutes while you’re waiting for something.
But the exact second you decide you’re running late?
They need the toilet.
They’ve lost a shoe.
They’ve found something terrifying in the hedge.
Or they suddenly decide that walking through the gate is absolutely unacceptable.
7. You have a sixth sense for horse poo
You can walk into a field and immediately know something isn’t right.
Too little poo?
Worrying.
Too much poo?
Probably fine.
A suspicious pile in the stable?
Investigation required.
And somehow you can tell whether your horse has been to the toilet before you’ve even properly looked.
8. Your horse has taught you patience
Horses have a wonderful ability to teach us that things don’t always go according to plan.
You might have planned a perfect schooling session.
Instead, you spend 20 minutes discussing why the corner is not, in fact, going to eat them.
Or perhaps you planned a relaxing hack and ended up having an argument about a plastic bag.
Sometimes the best horse days are the ones where absolutely nothing goes to plan.
9. You talk about your horse… constantly
People who don’t own horses probably don’t realise how often horses come up in conversation.
“What did you do at the weekend?”
“Went riding.”
“How’s your week been?”
“Fine. The horse has…”
“What are you doing Saturday?”
“Going to the yard.”
It’s not a hobby.
It’s a lifestyle.
10. You would do absolutely anything for them
And underneath all the mud, expense, early mornings and occasional arguments is the reason we do it.
