Horses are incredibly observant animals. They notice tiny changes in our body language, voice, breathing and behaviour — often long before we realise we’re giving anything away.
Whether you’ve owned horses for decades or are relatively new to the equestrian world, there’s a good chance your horse knows you better than you think!
1. They can tell when you’re nervous
Ever wondered why your horse suddenly becomes more alert when you’re feeling anxious?
Horses are prey animals, so they’re naturally tuned into changes around them. Your breathing, muscle tension, posture and even the way you hold the reins can change when you’re nervous.
And yes… they may notice it before you’ve even admitted to yourself that you’re worried!
2. They recognise your voice
Your horse can learn to recognise familiar voices and associate them with positive experiences.
That means your horse may know it’s you coming before they can even see you — particularly if you have a very distinctive “come on, let’s go!” voice!
3. They remember people
Horses have impressive memories. They can remember individuals, places and experiences, including both positive and negative interactions.
This is one reason consistency matters so much when handling and training horses. Building trust can take time, but once that relationship is established, it can be incredibly rewarding.
4. They know your routine
If your horse starts shouting the moment you arrive at the yard, don’t assume they’re psychic!
Horses are creatures of habit and quickly learn routines. They can associate certain times, sounds and behaviours with feeding, turnout, riding or going home.
And they certainly seem to know when dinner is five minutes late…
5. They notice when something is different
A new bucket, a different rug, a strange object in the hedge or a slightly unusual route to the arena can be enough to get a horse’s attention.
What looks completely insignificant to us can be very important to them.
This is actually one reason travelling horses can sometimes be challenging — unfamiliar environments can mean lots of new sights, sounds and smells to process.
6. They can read your body language
You might think you’re simply walking towards your horse, but your horse is taking in much more than that.
Your posture, pace, direction and even where you’re looking can communicate information.
This is why groundwork and quiet, confident handling can make such a difference. Horses don’t just listen to what we say — they watch what we do.
7. They have individual personalities
Anyone who has owned more than one horse will know this already!
Some horses are bold and confident. Some are cautious. Some are incredibly affectionate, while others prefer to keep you at arm’s length unless treats are involved.
Just like people, horses have individual personalities, preferences and quirks.
And sometimes the cheekiest horse on the yard is also the one who makes you laugh the most.
8. They can form strong bonds
The relationship between a horse and their owner can become incredibly strong.
Horses are social animals and naturally form relationships within their herd. Over time, they can become comfortable with familiar people and learn that certain humans mean safety, food, companionship and positive experiences.
That bond is one of the reasons owning a horse can be so much more than simply having an animal to ride.
9. They know when something feels different
Horses can be extremely subtle when something isn’t quite right.
Changes in behaviour, appetite, movement or temperament can sometimes be early clues that a horse isn’t feeling themselves.
Knowing your horse’s normal behaviour is therefore incredibly important. You’re often in the best position to notice when something has changed.
10. They probably know when you’re about to leave!
And finally, the ultimate horse superpower.
You can spend hours grooming, riding, poo-picking and filling haynets — but the moment you put your coat on and head towards the gate, your horse suddenly becomes extremely interested in you.
Perhaps they’re saying goodbye.
Or perhaps they’ve just remembered that you still owe them a carrot.
